What are Smart Classrooms?

Experimental classrooms can already sense the location and actions of the teacher and students, and change the environment accordingly. Remote sensing and control technologies, delivered over the ever-present network, are enabling real-time access to laboratories, sophisticated equipment, and experiments directly from the classroom. Advanced video conferencing and collaboration tools combined with real-time language translation tools allow the simple creation of learning communities with members across the globe. Real-time recording and indexing tools allow lectures to be captured and made searchable in a single pass. Using a wide variety of these and other emerging technologies, smart classrooms have evolved into spaces that bring the outside world into the discussion, affording students the opportunity to participate in increasingly active, hands-on learning activities. Simultaneously, as learning technology becomes more mobile, smart classrooms are extending beyond the physical space of a given room, going along with learners wherever they happen to be.
